PHILLIP LIM, Los Angeles, CA (2008)

Specifier: PARA-Project, LLC, Design Architect / Brooklyn, NY
Leong Architects, Architect of Record / St. Helena, CA
Installer: Modern Interiors / Compton, CA

Project: Phillip Lim’s latest flagship is a 5,000 sq. ft. fashion showroom & boutique on one of West Hollywood’s main shopping streets. A converted furniture showroom, the selling floor features a continuous curved wall with a skin of uniform acoustic foam spikes and a mix of daylight and artificial light throughout the space.

In order to simulate daylight, PARA-Project chose a double layer of NEW/LIGHT white translucent membrane stretched across the entire ceiling, secured by a custom aluminum rail and backlit by fluorescents. Pairs of MR16 lamps are also installed in the perimeter profiles. The double layer NEW/LIGHT membrane insures that no dirt or debris is visible in the monolithic ceiling, which glows like an artificial sky throughout the entire store.
